RESUMEN

Actualmente no se puede concebir a la cirugía como algo independiente de la medicina; en consecuencia, la enseñanza de la cirugía no puede separarse de los principios que rigen a la enseñanza de la medicina. Esta revisión tiene el objetivo de subrayar las particularidades del entrenamiento de un médico en el campo quirúrgico. Dado que el médico general debe estar capacitado para realizar ciertos procedimientos quirúrgicos en situaciones determinadas, en la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México se realizó un nuevo plan de estudios que consta de ocho competencias fundamentales en el campo quirúrgico. Un programa de cirugía bien estructurado no solo implica la definición precisa y clara de las competencias por adquirir durante el entrenamiento sino la correcta supervisión de ellas, el reforzamiento de conocimientos, las habilidades de educación continua, la aplicación de las evidencias médicas en el manejo de los pacientes y la evaluación de los resultados del aprendizaje obtenido.
