ABSTRACT
Osteoporosis, a debilitating condition, is a chronic and degenerative disease whose incidence grows jointly with chronological age. The purpose of this study is to explore the preparation of the family caregiver as far as osteoporosis is concerned. The social aspects of this disease not only affect health, but also the quality of life of the the sufferer and its family environment. In this vein, 44 participants designated by the elderly as their primary family caretakers were interviewed at home, using a semi structured questionnaire. This took place in Guadalupe, Nuevo León (Mexico) during Spring 2000. The findings point out a superficial knowledge of the disease and its risk factors among the family caretakers of the elderly. The on going demographic transition in Mexico which represents an important challenge going beyond a mere medical care.
