ABSTRACT

Insomnia is the most frequent alteration of sleep. It causes an impact on all spheres of the individual, its causes are multiple and have diverse origins. The International Classification of Sleep Disorders in its second edition is currently in existence. This classification allows us to distinguish the various sleep disorders based on the description of the essential characteristics, demographic data, predisposing factors, onset, course, complications, diagnostic criteria, differential diagnosis and others. Aiming to disseminate the diagnostic criteria for the different types of insomnia, this review is presented in two sections, specially targeted to health professionals related to the clinical area of neuroscience and mental health to make effective diagnostics in a practical way. Following is the first section of the review.
