Background: Sexual abuse (SA) is one of tragedies of our society of which millions of women are victims, most of them are children and teenagers. There are no clear statistics about the issue.
Methods: Incidence and general information about SA is explored in this study. Subjects 263 women older than 18 years old who lived in Palmar Norte and had a medical consultation the EBAIS during the period September-December 2005.
Results: 43.7% of the women said they had been SA victims: 71.3% of them underwent a single experience (an experience is the SA lived independently of their duration), others described up to 4 throughout their life. 81.3% of the 155 registered experiences, were revealed to someone else, but only 8.4% were denounced. 46.9% of the victims received support from the person to whom they revealed the SA. Around 85% of the experiences happened when the victims were younger than 18 years old. Most of them (65.8%) happened at a single moment, the rest extended from several days to more than 9 years. 163 men between ages 20 to 40 and always older than the victims were indicated as the responsible of the SA narrated experiences. 15.3% of them were unknown people, around 12% were uncles or neighbors, 8% were their dad, brother or father in law; most of the experiences were incestuous relations.
Conclusion: The SA incidence in the studied population is alarming, (as much as its characteristics), because it reveals there is much more abuse than considered.

Key words: sexual abuse, child sex abuse, incest, sexual violence, improper abuses, sexual pursuit, sexual aggression, rape.
