ABSTRACT
Calciphylaxis is a life-threatening form of metastatic calcification-induced micro vascular occlusion syndrome. Although traditionally observed in patients with end-stage renal disease and secondary hyperparathyroidism (traditional patients), this condition is becoming increasingly reported in patients with normal renal and parathyroid function (non-traditional patients). Pathogenesis is poorly understood but it is thought to be multifactorial. There are no evidence-based medicine treatment options available for this disease. We report a cases series of eight patients, including traditional and non-traditional, suffering from calciphylaxis, who were diagnosed in our department between years 2001 and 2011. We compared the clinical and biologic characteristics of our patients, the treatment administered and their outcome with the data described in the literature.
