ABSTRACT
Introduction: hospital infection rate is one of the quality standards of the services being more important in the intensive care units where these infections are both more frequently and seriously, that´s why they produce high morbidity and mortality rate and have a negative impact in health, economic and social costs.
Objective: to know the presentation of nosocomial infection in the pediatric intensive care unit.
Method: a descriptive retrospective trial of the patients admitted in the pediatric intensive care unit at the Sancti Spíritus Teaching Hospital who presented a nosocomial infection in it during five years was carried out. It was determinate percents as well as the incidence and mortality rate.
Results: nosocomial infection average rate was 6 patients every 100 discharge, patients less than one year of age were more affective. Neurological chronic diseases (11.4%), heart illness (5.7%), different causes of immunodeficiency (4.7%) as well as malnutrition (4.7%) were the principal risk factors. Nosocomial infection was associated in a 67,9% to central venous catheter, meantime respiratory nosocomial infection was associated to endotraqueal intubation in a 54.2%. Gram negative bacterium infection was usually found. There were five deaths for this reason.
Conclusions: nosocomial infection rate in our research is similar to different international papers. Patients less than one year of age, who presented neurological chronic disease, heart illness and malnutrition, were more affected.
