RESUMEN

Introducción: Existen múltiples factores que pueden llegar a afectar la elección de una especialidad en médicos internos de pregrado. Estudios previos han demostrado que un gran porcentaje de los estudiantes de medicina no contemplan a la neurocirugía como una de sus opciones de especialidad a realizar en un futuro.
Objetivo: Evaluar los factores que podrían generar interés o desinterés en realizar la especialidad en neurocirugía en médicos internos. De acuerdo con nuestra apreciación, este trabajo es el primero en el país que evalúa dicho aspecto.
Método: Este estudio fue llevado a cabo mediante el uso de un cuestionario conformado por 15 preguntas basadas en escala Likert, aplicado a 50 médicos internos. El mismo ha sido utilizado en diversas publicaciones internacionales.
Resultados: La mayoría de los estudiantes considera que la historia clínica neurológica es difícil de interrogar y los signos neurológicos son complicados de evocar. La mayoría de ellos (78%) no considera a la neurocirugía entre sus opciones de especialidad a realizar, por el largo periodo de formación que conlleva y porque puede afectar negativamente la vida familiar. Sin embargo, la mayoría de ellos (88%) reconoce que esta especialidad conlleva un alto prestigio e ingresos económicos.
Conclusiones: Este trabajo concuerda con la caída en popularidad de la neurocirugía como especialidad reportada en publicaciones internacionales, y remarca algunas áreas objetivo que pueden ayudar a mejorar la percepción en los médicos internos.
