Guía para la realización de estudios neurofisiológicos y su utilidad durante una pandemia (COVID-19)

RESUMEN

Introducción. El brote viral ocurrido en Wuhan (China) debido a un agente viral perteneciente a la familia de los coronavirus ha dado lugar a la enfermedad llamada Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID 19) y se ha declarado por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) como una emergencia de salud internacional. Hasta la fecha no existe una vacuna contra la COVID-19 y la mortalidad mundial se calcula en alrededor de un 3%. Entre los síntomas causados podemos encontrar: fiebre, tos, diarrea y entidades como la neumonía. La afectación del sistema nervioso se plantea que se manifiesta como mareos, cefalea, trastornos de la conciencia, ataxia, convulsiones, trastornos de la visión, olfación, gustación, neuralgias y mialgias. Considerando estas ideas es posible que la labor del neurofisiólogo sea requerida en la realización de estudios. Conclusiones. La neurofisiología clínica es una especialidad diagnóstica que frente a la pandemia de la COVID-19 tiene una utilidad limitada en el presente comparada con otras especialidades médicas, su implicación se encamina, aunque no se limita hacia la realización del Electro-encefalograma en Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos. El personal de Neurofisiología Clínica puede ser requerido y en su momento debe conocer y aplicar las medidas de protección tanto para el propio personal como para el paciente. El papel del SARS-CoV2 en el sistema nervioso del cuerpo humano se encuentra bajo investigación. Futuras investigaciones serán necesarias para esclarecer el papel del SARS-CoV2 en el sistema nervioso del cuerpo humano, lo que determinará la implicación de la Neurofisiología Clínica cara a la COVID-19.
