La medicina transfusional ha sido revolucionada por diversas disciplinas, en particular por la genética la biología molecular y la inmunología, puede decirse que el primer gran salto se da cuando Landsteiner descubre el sistema ABO, a partir de ese momento su desarrollo ha ido siempre en ascenso.
