RESUMEN

Desde sus inicios, los programas de rehabilitación cardíaca no incluían entre las modalidades de ejercicios el entrenamiento de resistencia a la fuerza muscular. La pérdida de masa muscular asociada al envejecimiento y la disminución de la prác-tica de ejercicio físico se asocian a la prevalencia de factores de riesgo que favore-cen la aparición o empeoramiento de las enfermedades cardiovasculares. La comu-nidad científica aboga cada vez más por incorporar este tipo de entrenamiento a los programas de rehabilitación y prevención secundaria, para lo cual se necesita con-sensuar criterios en cuanto al contenido de los ejercicios, los elementos metodoló-gicos y de seguridad que permitan su práctica eficaz y segura.
