De la absorción a la acción: la fisiología de la vitamina B12

RESUMEN
En la formación de las y los estudiantes de medicina de pre y
posgrado resulta fundamental fortalecer el conocimiento de
la fisiología, por ser la base para comprender los mecanismos
normales de funcionamiento del organismo e inferir los procesos
de la pérdida de la salud. El desarrollo tecnológico en la
medición de la concentración total sérica de la vitamina B
12 , y
de su fracción activa, tiene su sustento en el conocimiento fisiológico.
Asimismo, dada la estrecha relación existente entre
fisiología y fisiopatología, al analizar, por ejemplo, el funcionamiento
de un organismo con niveles séricos anormalmente
bajos o elevados de vitamina B
12 , durante el curso de una
enfermedad; el conocimiento de la fisiología de la vitamina B
12
facilita imaginar los sucesos/procesos biológicos internos que
pudieran explicar los hallazgos clínicos y de laboratorio. Este
trabajo se enfoca en la fisiología de la vitamina B
12 , presenta
de manera fácil y lógica su estructura, su proceso de absorción,
sus receptores celulares, sus proteínas transportadoras
y de unión, y las rutas metabólicas clave en las que participa.
Conocimiento que también puede ser usado como un ancla
para futuros estudios de investigación científica.
