Introducción

Las técnicas de reanimación para el tratamiento de pacientes adultos con traumatismos han evolucionado a lo largo del siglo XX. En su momento, las transfusiones de sangre entera (SE) se utilizaban como el estándar transfusional, mientras que actualmente la terapia con componentes sanguíneos es el método más utilizado en la mayoría de los centros que asisten a pacientes politraumatizados. Antes de la transición no se habían realizado estudios que demostraran una mejor eficacia del potencial hemostático de la SE en esta población de pacientes. Los conflictos en Irak y Afganistán han desafiado el dogma de que las transfusiones de SE no son el estándar de atención, y han demostrado su potencial terapéutico transfusional en adultos con traumatismos.
