RESUMEN
El amonio es un producto tóxico derivado del metabolismo proteico, con un metabolismo complejo que involucra diferentes órganos, en especial el hígado en donde se lleva a cabo el ciclo de la urea, que es fundamental para su eliminación. La hiperamonemia tiene etiología multifactorial y se asocia a diversos efectos deletéreos, de los cuales el edema cerebral y la hipertensión intracraneana son los más graves. Su diagnóstico temprano y oportuno así como el conocimiento de su ciclo metabólico y mecanismos fisiopatológicos son fundamentales para establecer el tratamiento más adecuado.
