Los campos de la Psiquiatría y la genética molecular han encontrado un terreno común que tendrá, en el futuro cercano, la mayor utilidad para el clínico. Este nuevo terreno de investigación pretende predecir la farmacocinética y la farmacodinamia de los psicofármacos en los pacientes que se encuentran bajo tratamiento, por medio de las herramientas de la genética molecular. En una visión "esperanzada" podríamos llegar a saber, antes de iniciar un tratamiento psicofarmacológico, si el paciente va o no a responder al mismo, y si presentará efectos colaterales y de qué tipo.
