Osteorradionecrosis en cabeza y cuello. Reporte de un caso clínico

RESUMEN

Desde 1895 en que Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen descubrió los rayos X, registrando la radiografía de su esposa, son muchos los avances que se han logrado. Henri Becquerel, Marie y Pierre Curie, Antoine Béclère, son entre otros investigadores, los que permitieron alcanzar lo que hoy conocemos como radioterapia. El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar el manejo de pacientes con cáncer en cabeza y cuello que son radiados, desde el punto de vista del cirujano dentista, especializado en prótesis maxilofacial. Teniendo como referencia un paciente radiado sometido a un tratamiento dental convencional, que evolucionó posteriormente con necrosis ósea que se conoce como osteorradionecrosis. El seguimiento de más de 3 años que se presenta, permite establecer algunas indicaciones y propuestas como parte de los protocolos de tratamiento oncológico en nuestra población, apoyándonos también en la revisión de la literatura. Resalta la importancia de intervenir oportunamente en los grupos asistenciales multidisciplinarios, instalando estrategias estomatológicas antes, durante y después de la aplicación de radiaciones ionizantes y la necesidad de divulgar las características e indicaciones que estos pacientes presentan, para una atención odontológica que no puede considerarse convencional.
