Enfermedad por reflujo gastroesofágico (ERGE) y esófago de Barrett
La enfermedad por reflujo gastroesofágico (ERGE) es la tercera causa más común de atención por padecimientos gastroenterológicos en Estados Unidos, con una prevalencia del 10 al 20%. El impacto económico de la ERGE es muy alto, en especial con relación al tratamiento. Además, es de vital importancia la identificación de posibles complicaciones y su tratamiento, tales como el desarrollo de estenosis, esófago de Barrett y adenocarcinoma esofágico. En un principio, el papel de la endoscopia se limitaba al diagnóstico e identificación de complicaciones, sin embargo, actualmente la endoscopia terapéutica representa una opción más para el tratamiento de la ERGE y sus complicaciones en pacientes seleccionados.
