RESUMEN

Antecedentes: mucocele es un término utilizado para describir una lesión apendicular que se distingue por distensión del órgano, la cual es causada por acumulación de mucina en su interior; no es posible definir con exactitud si se trata de una alteración benigna o maligna.
Caso clínico: se comunica el caso de una paciente de 76 años de edad con dolor crónico, a quien se le diagnosticó de forma preoperatoria una tumoración apendicular.
Conclusiones: se recomienda la intervención quirúrgica abierta para evitar la rotura de un mucocele intacto y para explorar ampliamente la cavidad abdominal. La hemicolectomía derecha, como tratamiento quirúrgico del mucocele apendicular, está reservada para enfermedades malignas, y para casos benignos sin rotura la apendicetomía es el tratamiento de elección.
