Cacao y chocolate: seducción y terapéutica

RESUMEN

Introducción: Se describen diversos aspectos relativos al chocolate desde una perspectiva biocultural, en la que se busca articular los aspectos sociales con los aspectos biomédicos. Se muestra un panorama descriptivo del cacao (Theobroma cacao), su sinonimia común y científica; su posible origen mesoamericano; la diversidad de usos: terapéuticos, rituales, alimenticios y como «moneda»; información histórica, fitoquímica y distribución geográfica. Es una planta de gran importancia económica mundial y con fuerte arraigo cultural en México. Objetivo: Recopilar información sobre el cacao y el chocolate con la finalidad de presentar una visión integral. Conclusiones: Se cuestionan mitos ampliamente extendidos que pesan sobre este vegetal y se destaca su importancia en general, en tanto que afrodisíaco, antitusivo, energizante, estimulante nervioso y cardiaco, galactogogo, laxante, pectoral, así como su potencial empleo en el tratamiento de numerosos padecimientos como: bronquitis, fatiga, insomnio, trastornos digestivos, del climaterio, nerviosos, renales, hepáticos, de la piel, dolor de muelas y de cabeza, entre otros.
