RESUMEN

El sistema respiratorio de los mamíferos produce diferentes tipos de patrones ventilatorios que responden al estado general del individuo. ¿Dónde se genera la actividad eléctrica que controla los músculos involucrados en la respiración? Actualmente, es aceptado que la respiración es generada por una red neuronal localizada en el tallo cerebral ventrolateral. Dicha región es conocida como el Complejo preBötzinger (preBötC). Los mecanismos de generación de la actividad rítmica del preBötC no se conocen del todo. El objetivo de esta revisión es proporcionar un panorama general del conocimiento existente de los mecanismos neuronales de la generación del ritmo respiratorio.
