Comunidades seguras, un modelo mundial para la prevención de lesiones y la promoción de seguridad

RESUMEN

Las lesiones constituyen un problema de salud en el mundo, por lo cual se hace imprescindible el empleo de estrategias para su prevención. El Modelo de Comunidades Seguras de la Organización Mundial de la Salud ha demostrado ser exitoso para la prevención de lesiones y la promoción de seguridad en países con niveles socioeconómicos diferentes. En este modelo, la comunidad es protagonista de las acciones, y en dependencia de las prioridades identificadas se orientan los programas para prevenir las lesiones según grupos de edad y de género, ambientes y situaciones, con participación activa de los diferentes sectores, así como el empleo de iniciativas y recursos locales. Se garantiza la sostenibilidad de las acciones a través de compromisos gubernamentales y alianzas entre los distintos sectores y organizaciones. La región de Latinoamérica se encuentra entre aquellas que tienen mayores tasas de mortalidad por lesiones y ya existen experiencias favorables con la implementación de este modelo en países como Chile, Perú y México, las cuales deben ser extendidas a otros países de la región.
