“La naturaleza detesta el vacío”
John Hunter

“La naturaleza detesta el vacío” dijo John Hunter hace casi doscientos años mientras trataba de explicar su concepto de curación espontánea, su creencia de que los tejidos tienden a curar naturalmente. Quizás, parafraseando a Hunter, Alan Apley, de Inglaterra, contestó a la pregunta de por qué curan los huesos rotos: “Porque están rotos”.1
Y lo que Hunter decía no lo hacía sin someterlo al rigor científico, fue un cirujano cuyo credo no fue ponderar, racionalizar o teorizar sobre la solución a un problema quirúrgico sino realizar el experimento. Fue el padre de la cirugía científica, convirtiendo un oficio en una ciencia experimental.
