Efectos tóxicos del plomo

RESUMEN
La exposición ambiental al plomo es un problema de salud pública a
escala mundial. De acuerdo con la Organización Mundial de la Salud ha
sido motivo de complicaciones, sobre todo por la exposición crónica, y
se estima que es la causa de 143 000 muertes cada año. El concepto de
intoxicación por plomo (
saturnismo, plumbosis o
plombemia) se define
con base en la evidencia científica de los efectos tóxicos del plomo
en concentraciones de 10 μg/dL o más en adultos y de 5 μg/dL o más
en niños; puede originar afectación renal y ósea, convulsiones, edema
cerebral y finalmente la muerte. Se ha reportado que en niños y adultos,
tras la exposición crónica, promueve una disminución del coeficiente
intelectual (IQ), hiperactividad y conducta antisocial. El plomo no tiene
ninguna función conocida en el cuerpo humano pero puede competir
con el metabolismo del calcio y del hierro. Por lo tanto, de manera más
estricta, la Organización Mundial de la Salud sugiere que no existen
concentraciones de plomo que puedan considerarse seguras. En la
actualidad el diagnóstico y el tratamiento están definidos; sin embargo,
recientemente se ha tomado en consideración la implementación de
medidas específicas en cada población. Es importante destacar que la
intoxicación por plomo es completamente prevenible, por lo que resulta
relevante la difusión de estrategias de prevención capaces de reducir
estas complicaciones de salud, que incluyan el replanteamiento de la
normatividad y regulación de los niveles de plomo en México.
