Endocarditis infecciosa

RESUMEN

La endocarditis infecciosa es una enfermedad inflamatoria, exudativa y proliferativa que afecta principalmente las válvulas cardiacas; su diagnóstico es fundamentalmente clínico con apoyo de algunos hallazgos bacteriológicos y de imagen. Se ha relacionado con circunstancias especiales como válvulas protésicas, esclerosis degenerativa de una válvula, abuso de drogas intravenosas, y está asociada a un mayor uso de procedimientos invasivos con riesgo de bacteriemia. Una amplia variedad de microorganismos pueden ocasionar endocarditis infecciosa, entre los cuales predominan las bacterias, sobre todo los estafilococos y estreptococos. El enfoque general para el tratamiento es la estabilización clínica inicial, la adquisición temprana de cultivos en sangre, el comienzo del tratamiento médico y/o quirúrgico definitvo. El éxito del abordaje dependerá de la elección de un antibiótico eficaz contra el agente causal.
