La diabetes mellitus tipo 2 y la obesidad son enfermedades multifactoriales que frecuentemente coexisten en el mismo individuo y en las que se ha demostrado la presencia de más de un componente genético, común o diferente para ambas, pero cuya expresión en un momento y con una intensidad determinados, está facilitada por condiciones nutricionales inadecuadas. Los estudios familiares han mostrado que los hijos de por lo menos un padre diabético, tienen un riesgo dos a cuatro veces mayor para desarrollar diabetes que el de las familias sin este antecedente, y que el riesgo es aún mayor y el inicio de la enfermedad se produce a menor edad si la madre es diabética.
