El estado de la anestesia general tiene consecuencias conductuales como amnesia, hipnosis, analgesia, inmovilidad y atenuación de los reflejos autónomos. Estas consecuencias se producen por interacciones específicas de los anestésicos generales sobre los locus neuronales. Jhon y otros1 proponen el paradigma de desintegración cognitiva de la anestesia general. Esta hipótesis afirma que los anestésicos actúan interrumpiendo diversos procesos de integración cognitiva desde el nivel celular hasta el nivel del encéfalo global. La cadena anestésica confirma el concepto de desintegración cognitiva a la vez que postula un proceso escalonado.
La cadena propuesta actúa de manera que la depresión del tronco encefálico reduce la influencia del sistema activador reticular ascendente sobre el tálamo y la corteza. La depresión de las interacciones entre la corteza mesolímbicas y la corteza prefrontral dorsolateral dan lugar al bloqueo del almacenamiento de la memoria.
