El dolor es el síntoma más frecuente y temido en la población oncológica y tiene implicaciones directas en la calidad de vida del paciente y el tiempo de supervivencia. El dolor por cáncer refractario al tratamiento convencional afecta al 10-15% de los pacientes. Por esto, las terapias intervencionistas para el manejo del dolor se introdujeron como el cuarto escalón del modelo de la escalera analgésica modificada de la OMS.
