Problems of the critical care medicine in Mexico

ABSTRACT

Objective: To inform about the psychosomatic alterations of the intensivist physicians as well as the loss of their economic capacity.
Design: Prospective study.
Setting: A polyvalent ICU of a tertiary care hospital, Mexico City.
Material and methods: We obtained the data of 94 attending physicians who work in 15 ICUs of Mexico City through an open survey. The data were compared with a previous report published in 1989.
Interventions: None.
Results: The psychiatric diseases had an incidence of three fold than the general population. The intensivist needs a major number of jobs to preserve his level of economic capacity similar to the previous status in 1989.
Conclusion: The intensivist need psychiatric help and an increase of his/her salary.
