ABSTRACT

Introduction: The characteristics of patients with acute coronary syndrome are not the same in smoking and non-smoking patients. Objective: Determine the clinical and angiographic characteristics of smoking and non-smoking patients with acute coronary syndrome. Method: A comparative descriptive study was conducted in 88 patients who agreed to participate. Hospital "Hermanos Ameijeiras". Period: July 2016-July 2017. Chi square test was applied to test hypotheses of difference between groups (α=0,05). Results: Of the group studied 72,2% had high blood pressure. 35,2% of those who smoked and 100% of non-smokers had no carbon monoxide poisoning (p < 0,001). Carboxyhemoglobin levels were light in 70,4% of smokers and 100% of non-smokers (p < 0,001). Acute myocardial infarction with ST elevation occurred in 51,9% of smokers and Unstable Angina in 52,9 of non-smokers(p > 0,05). 35,2% of smokers had a lesion of one vessel and 44,1% of non-smokers of three vessels (p < 0,05). AD lesion predominated in 38,9% of smokers and TCI in 44,1% of non-smokers. 37% of smokers had some complications and in non-smokers 67,6%. 5,9% of non-smokers died (p > 0,05). Conclusions: Both groups maintained carbon monoxide levels in the non-poisoning range, and slight carboxyhemoglobin levels. Acute myocardial infarction with ST elevation in smokers and unstable angina in non-smokers predominated. The latter with more lesions of three vessels and left coronary trunk and mortality.
