ABSTRACT

Objective: To know the incidence and pneumonia complications occurring after allogenic blood stem cell transplantation.
Design: Retrospective study.
Setting: Department of Hematology of a tertiary care hospital, Mexico City.
Patients: Twenty-two patients underwent blood stem cell transplantation (BSCT) who developed pneumonia during a one year period were included.
Results: The incidence of pneumonia was 13.6%, similar to international reports and the mortality rate was 100% due to multiple organ dysfunction.
Conclusion: The mortality rate in patients underwent BSCT is very high, therefore is important an opportune and adequate treatment of the infection.
