ABSTRACT

Objective: To report a case of leptospirosis and multiple organ dysfunction.
Design: Case report.
Setting: ICU of a regional hospital, Villahermosa, Tabasco; Mexico.
Patient: A 75-yrs-old man with leptospirosis. Interventions: Assisted mechanical ventilation, pulmonary arterial catheter insertion, tracheostomy, parenteral nutritional support, vaccine, antibiotics.
Measurements and main results: Patient develops Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, flaccid quadriparesis, jaundice, gastrointestinal bleeding and desnutrition. Dark field examination and ELISA test were positive to leptospirosis.
Conclusion: Severe leptospirosis may be associated with multiple organ dysfunction.
