ABSTRACT

Children with Down syndrome (DS) tend to have health issues, being some of them congenital heart problems, immune system related disorders and mechanical difficulties, such as performing oral hygiene procedures, which leads to an increase in dental plaque. Authors mention the presence of Candida albicans in acute infections caused by Streptococcus mutans in children with caries. Objective: To determine the colonization level of Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus and its interaction with Candida albicans in children with Down Syndrome in comparison with children with no syndrome. Materials and Methods: Non-stimulated saliva was collected from 46, 9.5 years old (average) children; 23 with DS and 23 with no DS (control). Streptococcus mutans´s CFU/ml was determined in a Mitis salivarius medium, then it was planted in a Dextrose saboraud medium and LBS to identify Candida albicans and Lactobacillus respectively. Results were statistically evaluated using T-test in SPSS 22 for paired data and descriptive statistics. Results: A higher level of Streptococcus mutans (2.20818X105ufc/ml) was found, with statistically significant difference in children with DS. Candida albicans was present in 86% of the children with DS and 64% of the children with no DS. The percentage of Lactobacillus in both groups was very similar.
