ABSTRACT

The paper describes some considerations on the concept of hegemonic masculinity. This includes the mandates that constitute it, in particular that, which is its basis, of being, if not sole, at least principal economic provider of the family. The moment this mandate cannot be fulfilled, it generates a profound crisis within the subjects of hegemonic masculinity, provoking serious effects, particularly in their state of health. The paper thus considers masculinity as a risk factor for males themselves. The analysis ties the social construction of masculinity with the existing social and economic structures of present day society, and directly with the phenomena of unemployment and work precarization.
