ABSTRACTIntroduction: Quality assurance in genetics services is a topic of great importance worldwide. Due to the increase in the number of genetic diseases and the incorporation of genetic tests into the management of common conditions, on many occasions the specialty is faced with the challenge of putting recently acquired knowledge into clinical practice. In Cuba genetics is oriented towards community medicine. The personnel involved in genetics services should apprehend concepts related to quality with a view to fostering the design and implementation of a quality management system.
Objective: Identify the requirements for the design and implementation of a system which will ensure the quality of results, enhance the perception and satisfaction of patients, and is applicable to genetics laboratories.
Methods: A theoretical study was conducted about the topic of quality in laboratories. Databases such as Pubmed and Science Direct were searched, using the key phrases "quality in clinical laboratories", "quality assurance in laboratories" and "quality in medical genetics".
Results: Key practices to ensure the quality of services, such as accreditation, certification, and internal and external control of the quality of results, are indispensable in all laboratories. Additionally, identification was performed of the main quality assurance challenges faced by clinical laboratories.
Conclusions: Establishment of strategies aimed at implementing a quality management system at institutions offering genetics services is indispensable to ensure the quality of diagnosis.
