Key words:

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), alcoholism, death.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is the third leading cause of violent death; it may be related to alcohol intake, age, sex, and the season of the year; the objective of this study was to determine the statistical relationship between alcohol poisoning and head injuries in autopsies performed at the Forensic Medical Service of the municipality of Veracruz-Boca del Río.
Material and Methods:
A retrospective, analytical and cross-sectional study was carried out in 1306 records of the SEMEFO Veracruz of which 302 corresponded to deaths with head injuries that occurred between the periods of January 2016 to December 2017. Inferential statistics were used by means of the X2 test, the risk of each odds ratio factor and 95% confidence interval.
Results:
The population was divided into two groups: group I was made up of individuals with a diagnosis of TBI and alcohol poisoning (n = 118, 52%) and group II was made up of individuals with a diagnosis of TBI without alcohol poisoning (n = 110, 48%) (OR = 3.59 95% CI 1.36-6.45); this variable was statistically significant (X2 = 3.286, p ‹0.05). There were 142 deaths from TBI in 2016 and 160 deaths from TBI in 2017.
Conclusions:
As cause of death, TBI was associated with alcohol intoxication in 52% of the cases, more frequently in males and in the month of December; the most affected ages were from 15 to 46 years.
