ABSTRACT

Intestinal tuberculosis is an endemic disease in Mexico and developing countries. Of the extrapulmonary manifestations, the intestinal ones are the sixth most prevalent cause, representing 20% of the cases.
A case 17-year-old male who underwent colonoscopy with findings of multiple ulcers with bleeding treated endoscopically is presented. Histological examination of biopsies describes ileitis and chronic ulcerated granulomatous colitis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, positive Ziehl-Neelsen stains for acid-alcohol-fast microorganisms was found. Taking biopsies by colonoscopy is the diagnostic method of choice, obtaining the diagnosis in more than 75% of cases.
Conclusions. colonoscopy as an initial resource allowed definitive treatment of bleeding, obtaining images and tissue for histopathological analysis.
