ABSTRACT

Ischemic stroke is the second cause of death worldwide and is one of the main causes of disability. Approximately 15% of strokes are caused by atherosclerotic disease of the vessels of the neck. The detection of this disease, as well as the management to attack it, are key pieces in the prevention of stroke, as well as the diminution of its impact on health systems. For the elaboration of the following document, the Guidelines and Management of atherosclerotic disease of the carotids and vertebral arteries of the European Society of Vascular Surgery were taken, and it was proposed to update the said document with the most current data at the time of its execution. For this purpose, a bibliographic search was performed in indexed databases. Each patient with carotid disease should be approached according to their clinical condition, percentage of obstruction, presence or not of symptomatic disease and comorbidities. The management should not be surgical in all cases, but in cases that require it, it should be addressed expeditiously. The control of risk factors and medical management are of critical importance in the management of this pathology.
