ABSTRACT

Introduction: The psychological manifestations of the critical patient are a determining element in the success of the weaning process.
Objective: To determine the psychological manifestations of the critical patient during the weaning process.
Methods: A mixed, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in the critical patient care units at Miguel Enríquez Clinical Surgical Teaching Hospital, from June to December 2019. The sample consisted of 15 patients and 15 professionals. The study variables were physical and emotional symptoms, communication methods, presence of family members, perception of psychological support and phrases used during the process. Qualitative empirical methods such as survey and interview, and statistical methods were used for data analysis and processing.
Results: No correlation was detected between the physical symptoms registered by professionals and patients. Anxiety, concern for the state of health and despair were the emotional symptoms most reported by patients and professionals. 60% of professionals accept the presence of family members during the weaning process. Negative psychological manifestations predominated in accompanied patients. Oral communication and body language were the most used method.
Conclusions: Differences were detected in the interpretation of physical manifestations between patients and professionals; pain was underestimated by professionals. Anxiety, concern for their health and despair were the most frequent psychological manifestations. Family support did not favor the decrease in psychological symptoms. The limitations of the communication methods contributed to the difference in the interpretation of the symptoms.
