ABSTRACT

Introduction: The cleft lip and cleft palate are oral pathologies related to labial and palatal dysglossia, which affect the phonation. Objective: To analyze the bucal-phonatory problems associated with labial and palatal dysglossia in patients that attended the Fundación Operación Sonrisa Ecuador (FOSE) in 2018. Material and methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional observational study was carried out on a sample of 62 medical records filled out by professionals from different FOSE health areas. 42 of them were selected based on criteria by intentional non-probability sampling. The speech algorithm was used. Results: Spearman's test showed statistically that the nasolabial speech scale showed a very low negative correlation, the provoked nasolabial speech scale and the phonatory effort test showed a low positive correlation. In general, the speech scale showed a very low positive correlation respect to the grouped pathologies (cleft lip, cleft palate, and cleft lip and palate). The statistical significance value between the two variables was greater than 0.05 (p = 0.437) according to the ANOVA test. Conclusion: There was not enough evidence to find differences between the means of the diagnostic impression groups related to the speech scale due to the variability of the different types and subtypes of pathologies. The total of the speech scale showed a very low positive correlation with respect to the grouped pathologies. This means that these oral lesions still have a minimal influence on the production of phonemes, even when one or more surgical interventions had been performed.
