At the level of our Hospital, the cases of mental disorders associated with drug use saturate the emergency service. The objective of the study was to highlight the factors associated with drug use in the child and adolescent population.
Methods Design cross-sectional study, place of study National Hospital Psychiatric population records of 375 boys and girls aged between 11 years and 18 years, data analysis techniques used, prevalence OR, p, 95% CI. Results 38, 9% (n = 146) female sex, 60.1% (n = 229) male sex, mean age 16 years, nationality, 95% (n = 361) Costa Ricans, schooling 43% (n = 161) primary complete 40.5% (n = 152) incomplete primary, school dropout 25%. the mean number of days of stay was 34 days, primary diagnosis 36% (n = 135), acute psychotic symptoms, secondary diagnoses, the harmful use of cannabinoids in 76% (n = 285), harmful use of cocaine in 54% (n = 202). The prevalence of dual pathology was 75%, intrafamily violence (FIV) OR = 6.79 (0.006), alcohol consumption OR = 6.3 (p = 0.03), the presence of history of drug use in parents OR = 5.68 (p = 0.038), fellow consumers OR = 5.68 (p = 0.038)
Conclusion The results coincide with those reported by other authors at the international level, the factors associated with drug use operate both in the family environment and in the individual influenced by the peer group, and the school environment, all these, can be modified, so it is feasible and priority to design multidisciplinary prevention and protection programs, directed from the areas of the community, the family, the school and health, creating strategic alliances, fostering in the family, attachment and individual protection factors and of pairs, taking into account that they are very low cost compared to those of treatment.
