Pregnancy in COVID-19 times, a scientific evidence approach

ABSTRACT

Infection with the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 causes COVID-19, an infectious disease that, at present, seriously affects people of all ages. There are population groups that are more vulnerable to suffer its negative consequences on their health status and even causing death. Pregnant women constitute a priority group in terms of intensive surveillance, due to the current scarce scientific evidence on this subject, the impact on pregnancy and fetal development. Up-to-date and reliable scientific information is offered about the reporting of mild or asymptomatic cases of COVID-19 in pregnant women, the mild intensity of the cytokine storm, and the association of chronic hypertension and super-added pre-eclampsia in the critical or severe state of the patients. The new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus produces mild or asymptomatic clinical forms in pregnant women. Maternal comorbidities are closely related to severity and critical condition, chronic hypertension with super-added preeclampsia stands out.
