ABSTRACT
Introduction: Organ transplant represents the best medical-therapeutic resource in terms of survival and quality of life for thousands of patients with terminal organic dysfunction on the world. Despite the progress in this field, there is a resistance in the population of Quintana Roo that impacts negatively on the organ donation culture, that is reflected in the low donation rates. Therefore, the objective of this study is to identify the sociodemographic characteristics and population culture towards the donation and transplant process at IMSS HGR17 of Cancún, Quintana Roo and this way, compare if it matches the existent literature.
Material and methods: Descriptive transversal observational study. A questionnaire was designed to evaluate the transplant culture; it was applied to 384 users at IMSS HGR17. The questionnaire was structured with 17 items, divided in three sections: sociodemographic factors, donation culture and reasons not to donate. A descriptive statics and bivariate analysis were used to determine the culture level; a level of 0.05% was considered significant.
Results: Of the total amount of surveyed people, the predominant characteristics were: female (59.9%), catholic (56.8%), married (44%), basic education level (49.5%), economically active population (59.2%). By evaluating the transplant culture, 25.52% has good donation culture and is related to the degree of knowledge (p = 0.001). 90.4% knows what organ donation means and 91.7% received information about donation. 77.9% of the surveyed users would accept to donate. The main causes of negativity towards donations were the lack of information about the donation process (49.4%), the burial beliefs (40%) and the belief in organ trafficking (30.5%).
Conclusions: The main cause of denial towards donation found is the lack of information on the donation and transplant process, so it would be worthwhile to work on the diffusion and promotion of information on said process, with the objective of increasing the culture of donation in the population and clarify myths and erroneous beliefs on the subject. Likewise, a lack was found in the communication of the decision to be or not a donor of organs and tissues, which is why it is important to encourage the population to express said decision among the families.
