ABSTRACT

The fascinating development in information technology that has taken place right in front of our eyes in the last few years is described in detail, mentioning the names of the innovators, their contributions, the repercussions, the seemingly contradictory complication and simplification of the machines, and the path followed by the huge companies as well as by the quiet, individual study. It describes hard and software, windows, and Microsoft, almost esoteric terms, and helps in the understanding of silicon, chips, central processors and finally, the nets and the net of nets, the Internet. Individually, nobody can survive as a mere spectator of these changes and it is good to know that in our country there have been notable pioneers such as Doctors Negrete Herrera and Ramón Boom. They perceived the importance of the field and concerned themselves in incorporating knowledge, techniques and practice into the medical teaching of students through such programs as Medline and the refreshing and stimulating National Medical Digital Library of the Faculty of Medicine, UNAM.
