Educational intervention on clinical skills of pediatricians in training in a simulation laboratory: Randomized and controlled study

ABSTRACT

Research on the use of simulation as a learning tool in postgraduate programs is growing. Pediatric patients have characteristics that warrant specific knowledge. We report the findings of a randomized controlled trial to assess an educational intervention for the training in clinical skills. 37 pediatric trainees agreed to participate in a randomized training program in which they were assessed in two clinical skills that combined procedural and communicational components. Two independent observers evaluated the performance before and after the intervention using checklists and rating both global skills and number of errors. We found a significant improvement that lasted over a two month wash out period. The controlled design allowed to relate performance with actual training. Significant differences were also found in procedural skills with an improvement in both global ratings and errors. Communicational skills improved in all participants.
