Characterization of addicted patients who attended ''Dr. Carlos J. Finlay'' Central Military Hospital, 2016-2018

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Substance addiction is a disease that has a high incidence and prevalence worldwide, so its study is necessary to be prepared to care for these patients and work on prevention.Objective: Describe the spatio-temporal distribution of patients addicted to psychoactive substances who were treated at Dr. Carlos J. Finlay Hospital from 2016 to 2018, and its relationship with epidemiological variables such as person, place and time.
Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out. The universe consisted of 257 patients who were treated from 2016 to 2018 at Dr. Carlos J. Finlay Hospital. The information was obtained from the medical records and the results gathered from the semi-structured interview carried out with the patients. Descriptive statistics techniques were used for data analysis. The ethical principles were fulfilled according to the type of research.
Results: Patients´ average age was about 34 years. Consumption substances were alcohol, marijuana and the modality known as polydrug use. Initiation of use was approximately at the age of 17 years, and the time of use was in the range of 15 years or more. They were characterized by a moderate to severe consumption pattern and high tolerance levels. The patients studied came from all the provinces of the country.
Conclusions: The patients studied were characterized by being male, young adults, with onset of consumption in adolescence and mostly from Havana.
