ABSTRACT

Introduction: The comprehensive health-disease vision is applicable to all human beings and to all diseases, so patients with epilepsy are not strangers to these conceptions. Objective: Determine the behavior of the personality in its dimensions of stable or unstable (neurotic), and no introversion- extroversion balance, in these patients. Methods: 272 adults with epilepsy were analyzed using questionnaires such as Eysenck and WPSI. Different variables and the presence of neuroticism were analyzed through the use of chi square. Results: The unstable personality predominated in 59.9% of the adult subjects with epilepsy, and the introversion-extroversion balance in 67.6% of them. The unstable personality prevailed in the age range between 26 and 55 years (74.2%; p = 0.0007), in females (69.8%; p = 0.0011), in primary school (51, 2%; p <0.0001), in cases of epilepsy of unknown cause (82.1%; p = 0.0047), in patients with more than 20 years of evolution of epilepsy (69.2%; p = 0.0195), in those taking barbiturates or benzodiazepines (75%; p = 0.0288), and in adults with global psychosocial malfunction (73.1%; p = 0.0008). Conclusions: In adults with epilepsy, the neurotic personality predominates. The variables that seem to interact with this are: chronological age, female sex, ignorance of the cause of epilepsy, the longest time the seizures have evolved, medication with barbiturates or benzodiazepines and global psychosocial malfunction.
