ABSTRACT
Objectives: Report our experience in laparoscopic procedures using the laparoscope and an optical port as a unit for the abdominal approach.
Design: Prospective, non-comparative, multicentric, longitudinal, observational study with no exclusion for patients with previous abdominal surgery.
Material and methods: During the period of june 1997 - june 2004, 1,372 patients were operated by one laparoscopic surgical group using this approach in third level hospitals of Mexico City, analyzing the following: surgery type, previous abdominal surgery, site and duration of this approach and complications.
Results: The umbilical approach was used for all patients (1,372). Two hundred and eighty eight (21%) had previous abdominal surgery. The average time for this approach was 35 seconds, with no complications.
Conclusions: The use of an optical port and laparoscope as a unit in the laparoscopic abdominal approach is safe, confident, reproducible and easy to perform, reducing complications of blind approaches.
