Traumatic diaphragmatic hernia repaired by thoracotomy

ABSTRACT

A patient is described as being treated at the General Teaching Hospital of Chimborazo, Riobamba, Chimborazo Province, Ecuador, by Dr. Rodrigo Fiallo Cobos. The 75- year-old patient, with a history of closed thoracoabdominal polytraumatism due to a traffic accident, came to the Cardiology Service, one year later, for evaluation of her arterial hypertension. Among other tests, a standard chest x-ray was performed, which showed the presence of a left- rounded pericardial mass emerging from the left hemidiaphragm, which was compatible with a left diaphragmatic hernia. An abdominal CT scan was performed confirming the presence of a rounded mass, with epiploic content and intestinal air in relation to a defect of the left hemidiaphragm, compatible with diaphragmatic hernia, without signs of intestinal obstruction. The patient was operated on using left posterolateral thoracotomy with a satisfactory recovery.
