Nosocomial wound infections in general surgery patients

ABSTRACT

The objective in this study is to describe the frequency and the characteristics about nosocomial infections in surgical wards in postoperative patients in the Surgery Department of the Hospital General "Dr. Manuel Gea Gonzalez", between January and June 2000.
Of the 555 postoperative patients, 14 patients had nosocomial infections in surgical wounds. In the most cases, the treatment was metronidazol and cephtriaxone. The surgical procedures related were principally laparotomy, cholecystectomy and appendectomy. There is not reports of medical or surgical complications. Is important emphasize the need to realize deeper epidemiological studies investigations for to identify high risks patients for postoperative nosocomial infection in order to decrease the health and economy costs for the patients and the hospital.
