ABSTRACT

We reviewed our experience, the initial and late outcomes, and evaluated clinic and angiographic results of treatment with percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty and endovascular prosthesis (stents) in young adults ‹ 40 years of age.
In the period between February 1994 and July 1999, we performed 856 procedures in a select group 22 patients (24 PTCA with 1.09 stent per patient); mean age 31.8 ± 6; 21 men and only one female; seven patients with clinical presentation of severe angina accordingly to the Cardiology Canadian Association (ACC). In 68%, previous myocardial infarction were observed; the mean percentage of coronary obstruction was 90.08 ± 5.2 and ejection fraction 46.8 ± 4.3. The immediate angiographic success was 91%. Any patient was going to elective coronary bypass surgery, and any died. The follow-up was made from 2 to 50 months. All patients were evaluated by exercise stress test and/or nuclear medicine with negative results, only in two patients were positives. Arteriography control was obtained in 50%. Conclusions: PTCA with stent implantation is a success angiographic and clinical procedure, this is a very good therapeutic option in this group of patients.
