ABSTRACT
Introduction: Acute appendicitis is the most common cause of surgical emergencies in children with abdominal pain. The risk of suffering from it is 6-20%; it is classified as uncomplicated and complicated, the latter being the disease with the highest morbidity and mortality. The gold standard of treatment is surgical resection of the appendix by open surgery or laparoscopic technique. Despite of all the published benefits of the laparoscopic technique, there are few series in Mexico about the advantages in the pediatric population. Objective: To know the frequency of postoperative complications of laparoscopic appendectomy in pediatric patients and to determine if the technique is safe and benefits the pediatric population. Material and methods: A cross-sectional, observational, descriptive, retrospective, study was carried out with 135 pediatric patients who underwent to laparoscopic appendectomy over a period of five years at the Hospital General "Dr. Manuel Gea González". Results: 135 cases were registered. Of the total, 84 cases (62.2%) presented as uncomplicated acute appendicitis, and 51 cases (37.8%) as complicated. Postoperative complications occurred in seven patients (5.2%). Conclusions: According to the results of this study laparoscopic appendectomy in pediatric patients is a safe technique with a low frequency of complications.REFERENCES
